‘Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 2’ finds further exposition in Calvin Harris, 21 Savage’s ‘New Money’

Placing strong piano chords at a production’s intro is quintessentially Calvin Harris; the stylistic hallmark, also audible on 2012’s “Feel So Close” or 2017’s “Slide,” to name just a few, confers a degree of warm familiarity to “New Money,” the latest preview of Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 2. In a May interview with Apple Music‘s Zane Lowe, Harris confessed that he’d “lost [his] fuck you juice for a couple years,” but even at this early stage in the Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 2 rollout, it’s evident that his “fuck you juice” isn’t just back—it’s ice cold and on tap. Well, that’s what’s coursing through his veins on “New Money,” the second addition to the Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 2 that finds Harris deepening and enriching the “funk wav” sound. It’s worth noting that although Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1 was guided by Harris’ beats-first-artists-second approach to dance/electronic production, his methodology for Vol. 2 diverges from this pattern. “I was making beats and I was just making beats,” Harris told Lowe. “I was like, ‘I’m going to make beats that are like this and then I’m going to try and get some artists on it. And that’s how I tend to do things with dance music. So I approached [Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1] in the same way and I was like, ‘I’ll just make beats, except they’ll sound like this, but they’ll still clearly be electronic beats,’ whereas with this one [Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 2] I was like, ‘well I want to have more, I want to have live drums and I want to have guitars and stuff.’”And that’s precisely what Harris lays down on “New Money,” a piano-girded addition to the Vol. 2 tracklist that sources its wordplay from 21 Savage. It’s a deviation from the sound of “Potion,” the viscous and altogether easygoing opener to Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 2 that landed on May 21 with vocal presence from both Dua Lipa and Young Thug. “New Money” trails the recent revelation of Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 2‘s A-list cast of collaborators; the announcement synced with the five-year anniversary of the compilation that started it all, Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1. To welcome appearances from Tinashe, Offset, Halsey, Snoop Dogg, Jorja Smith, and more, the second chapter in the Funk Wav saga is slated to hit digital streaming platforms on August 5. In the meantime, Harris can be found scripting the soundtrack to summer 2022 below.Featured image: Calvin Harris/InstagramTags: , , ,
