Plastikman and Chilly Gonzales share short film in tandem with newly revamped LP

The newly unveiled rework of Plastikman, also known as Richie Hawtin‘s iconic 1998 minimal-techno record, Consumed, is now available to stream. The pioneering electronic music producer brought aboard Grammy Award-winning pianist Chilly Gonzales for the commemorative project, aptly retitled Consumed in Key. In tandem of the LP’s release, the pair enlisted Berlin-based director Hiroo Tanaka to direct a captivating short film to accompany the project. Haunting and wondrously innovative, the album has been three decades in the making, collaboratively made by the two revered artists and executive produced by Montreal-based Turbo Recordings founder, Tiga.

Shortly after the 20th anniversary of Consumed‘s release, composer Chilly Gonzales recalls listening to the album for the first time and feeling a mix of intrigue and curiosity. He dubbed the album “the science fiction of jazz” and felt as though the work’s free-form take on melodies and negative space “disrupted his musical sensibility.” And so, he immediately went to work composing piano arrangements to pair alongside each tune in the original record. Tiga would later go on to fill in the gaps between both of the artists compositions. As seen realized in the short film which debuted on April 1, Consumed in Key is a culmination of musical innovation from two luminaries over years of growth and a unique communality found at the intersection of an unlikely pairing of genres and instrumentals: techno music and classical piano composition.
