Beyoncé preps release of new visual album celebrating black culture and resilience, ‘Black is King’

Beyoncé is preparing the release of a brand new visual album, Black is King, due on July 31 Disney+. The project, which has been in production for at least a year, is based heavily on the music Beyoncé curated for The Lion King: The Gift soundtrack, which accompanied the animated remake of the iconic film that Beyoncé starred in in 2019.

Black is King is set to feature many of the artists featured on The Gift, which included Donald Glover, 070 Shake, Jessie Reyez, Mr. Eazi, and more. According to a statement by Beyoncé’s Parkwood Entertainment imprint, the album is meant to reimagine the lessons of the Lion King for today’s generation.

The press statement from Disney elaborates,

“[Black is King] honors the voyages of Black families throughout time, and tells the story of a young king’s journey through betrayal, love and self-identity. Guided by his ancestors, father and childhood love, he earns the virtues needed to reclaim his “home and throne.”

Black is King is led by a visually stunning one-minute trailer, available to view on Beyoncé’s website.
