Truth x Lies‘ trade? That would be idiosyncratic tech-house, and if you didn’t know that by now, then allow Ian Bertles and Ryan Howard’s IN / ROTATION-hosted three-pack to serve as your much-needed lesson in Truth x Lies’ style. In 2020, Dancing Astronaut tapped the New York City tag team as an Artist to Watch in 2021, a title that Truth x Lies earned through their consistently club-minded originals, which approached tech-house production with an inventive twist. The boys’ personality continues to translate to their offerings, with their Essential EP serving as the latest flavorful example. Citing their intent to “show [their] range while still making sure that all of the tunes really sound like us,” Truth x Lies say they “did something a little different” for the EP—and it shows. Intermingling club-centric elements (see “Essential,” which loosely recalls the vocal approach of The Chainsmokers’ “#SELFIE”) with the sub-heavy, old-school-inflected (cc “Like This”) with some wonkier sounds (i.e., “Do It Right”), the Essential EP makes a splash on streaming platforms as it further cements Truth x Lies’ status as a tastemaker in the tech-house domain, what with Zeds Dead, Alison Wonderland, Bingo Players, Codes, and DEKOVA showing early support for the project.Stream the EP, dubbed “a bit of an experiment” by Bertles and Howard themselves, below.Featured image: Truth x Lies/InstagramTags: artist to watch, IN / ROTATION, tech house, truth x lies
