New York is dancing again—Brooklyn Mirage formalizes city’s return to the dance floor with grand reopening [Review]

On July 1, New Yorkers dusted off their dancing shoes—and their rain boots. After nearly two years of COVID-19-induced dormancy, the Brooklyn Mirage was throwing open the doors to 140 Stewart Avenue. And, after the trying events of the past 24 months or so, a little precipitation wouldn’t be enough of a deterrent to dissuade ticket holders from flocking to the open-air oasis for a return to normalcy—rain or shine.Venue staff were prepared; this wasn’t their first rodeo, after all, and not even several years of inactivity could dull their expertise. Passing out ponchos to ticket holders to make the return to live programming amid pouring rain as pleasant as possible, staff seamlessly guided attendees from security to ticket check (no COVID-19 vaccine card nor negative test result required) to wristband top-off. Tap. The sounds of Lee Foss, MEDUZA, and SIDEPIECE spilled through the 6,000-person capacity space, reacquainting attendees with the expanse and caliber of production of a venue that’s reigned as one of New York’s choice sites for live music since its establishment in 2017. And, as the rain fell from the sky, glittering in the neon lights, East Williamsburg was doing what it does best, without missing a beat—dancing. The Mirage team sustained the momentum set by MEDUZA’s headlining reopening party with subsequent shows featuring REZZ (July 2), a slew of acts tapped for Cityfox Regenerate (July 3), and Black Coffee (July 4 – 5) over the holiday weekend, and will continue to do so in the months to come. For those who’ve visited the venue pre-COVID, the Brooklyn Mirage’s reopening constitutes a must-return that many of the borough’s most eager have likely already made. For those who’d not yet had the chance to step foot inside the indoor-outdoor events space, it signifies a summer plan that ought soon to be made, and one that holds the promise of experiencing an event at the Mirage in the same way that one would pre-COVID, considering that attendees need only to bring their IDs and are not limited by now-lifted social distancing restrictions.
