Krysta Youngs’ singing-songwriting prowess shines on ‘MENTAL BREAKDOWN’

After co-writing BTS‘ lead single “ON” and scoring platinum and Billboard No. 1 status, emergent singer-songwriter Krysta Youngs is increasingly using her lyrical talents to shape her solo project. Youngs, who’s featured on productions released via Spinnin’, Armada, DimMak, Lowly, Sony, and Trap City, most recently put pen to paper for “MENTAL BREAKDOWN,” a fluid, pop-leaning number with tropically inclined percussive work. Her first original of 2022, “MENTAL BREAKDOWN” lyrically explores the emotions associated with, in her own words, “loving someone who isn’t right for you.” Through this lens, Youngs assets that the song embodies “the realization that love has a life of its own. It breaks you down and spits you out, but only if you let it.”Accompanied by a brightly hued visual that feels a bit like Tove Lo’s “Habits (Stay High)” video in its narrative rhythm, “MENTAL BREAKDOWN” finds Youngs courting aesthetic whimsy in a contemplative context. In the past, Youngs’ work has soundtracked installments of shows like MTV’s The Real World, Selling Sunset, Million Dollar Beach House, and Keeping Up with the Kardashians, and “MENTAL BREAKDOWN” tacks on to her robust resume with personality and easy listening appeal.Tags: ,
