Those that were casually scrolling Instagram on June 26 might’ve come across a story from Porter Robinson that quietly announced that he would be playing an intimate piano set in the depths of Electric Forest later that afternoon. And following his Ranch Arena closing set the evening before and a few hours ahead of his Air2Earth alter-ego appearance at Electric Forest’s Tripolee stage, Robinson stood before a few hundred people—while surrounded by a group of security—where he converted music from Nurture, Worlds, and more into piano form. While we’re still hoping for a full-length recording of John Summit and Subtronics‘ surprise back-to-back a couple of days earlier, Nancy Danh Huynh was thankfully there to capture Robinson’s 15 minute-plus performance in its entirety. From a wholesome moment of the crowd singing along to “Look At The Sky” to the unexpected reveal of an unnamed new track to even bringing a fan up for a brief piano duet, the impromptu set in front of the sitting crowd was everything it lived up to be, and then some.
