The Wonderful HumminGuru Orbit Vinyl Static Remover: Editor’s Choice Award

There are a lot of things that can go wrong with the vinyl listening experience, from warped records to dirty ones, to too much static electricity, but when it goes right, it’s all worth it. Vinyl people love a bit of ritual, so these minor inconveniences are worth it, but one stands out as the peskiest of all: static electricity. It feels like your record is actively trying to sabotage you, and it is a real challenge to eliminate, especially if you have a room or environment that easily generates it. I’ve tried the various slipmats, brushes, and deep-cleaning techniques, and it still pursues me like the Demon in the movie It Follows.

The static brush, leather slipmat, and Milty Zerostat 3 static gun have been my defense, until now. I was browsing HiFi gear on Turntable Lab’s website and saw the HumminGuru Orbit Vinyl Static Remover. This device sits on your spindle and rotates around 10 times, taking all the static electricity with it. I had to test this, so I reached out to the team in Hong Kong and arranged for one to be sent. Here are the results.

The HumminGuru Orbit Vinyl Static Remover is designed to shut down static electricity with zero hassle: no brushes, no sprays, no standing over your vinyl with Zerostat 3, hoping you get it right. Just press a button and let science quietly fix the surface of your record. This is a modern solution to a very old, very annoying problem—and it does so in a way that feels refreshingly hands-off and more thorough.

HumminGuru I-Brush Record Cleaning Kit

Another item worth looking at is a good cleaning brush kit, and HummingGuru makes the I-Brush Record Cleaning Kit ($16-$19) that comes with a stand, two cleaning surfaces (one for wet wipe-down and the other for drying), and it works well. You can apply this cleaning method to your record before running the Orbit. This will help ensure there are no large particles on your vinyl and ensure playback is perfect.

Note: The Milty Zerostat 3 has been the industry standard for a long time, but it’s been just ok from my experience. It does work, but in heavy, static-prone environments like mine, it’s not perfect, and I often have to do two rounds to knock out the static and still suffer through a bit of crackle before it gets perfect.

What Problem the HumminGuru Orbit Actually Solves

Static electricity on vinyl records causes three main headaches:

Dust magnetism – Static turns your record into a lint roller for airborne debris. If you are in a dusty environment, this can become the bane of your existence.

Audible noise – This is a BIG one for me, as it drives me nuts to hear any type of surface noise on a perfectly cleaned record. The Crackles, pops, and background that cleaning alone won’t remove go away when you use the Orbit. This really can kill the experience, you’ve gone to every effort to get your record clean, even brushing your stylus, and the playback is crackly.

Playback handling issues – Records clinging to mats, sleeves, or your hands like they’re scared of being alone. I’ve probably screamed more obscenities than I care to know trying to get a static-filled record into or out of its sleeve. Static cling, I truly hate you.

You can wet-clean a record to perfection and still get static buildup the second you pull it from a sleeve—especially in dry environments. That’s the frustrating part. Cleaning and static removal are not the same job.

The HumminGuru Orbit exists specifically to deal with static, not grime. And that focus is why it works so well.

HumminGuru makes what look to be some very cool vinyl cleaners, so I might test one of those down the road. I currently use the Kirmuss Audio cleaner, which, despite its sketchy branding and Shamwows marketing, is legitimately one of the best on the market. Don’t judge the website.

HumminGuru Orbit Space Requirement

Why Static Electricity Is a Real Issue for Vinyl

Static builds up when two surfaces rub together—vinyl and inner sleeves, vinyl and platter mats, vinyl and dry air. Low-humidity environments are the worst offenders because moisture in the air normally helps dissipate electrical charge. Take that moisture away, and static just hangs around like an uninvited guest.

Static causes:

  • Pops that mimic groove damage
  • Increased surface noise
  • Stylus attraction to dust (which accelerates wear)
  • Records that cling to mats or fly out of sleeves like they’re possessed

And no, your $20 carbon fiber brush isn’t solving all of that. It helps—but it doesn’t neutralize charge at a molecular level.

How the HumminGuru Orbit Works

The Orbit uses plasma ionization. In simple terms, it releases both positive and negative ions that neutralize the electrical charge sitting on your record’s surface.

HumminGuru claims the Orbit outputs over 50 million +/- ions per cubic centimeter, which is serious firepower for something that sits quietly on your shelf looking like a minimalist desk accessory.

Here’s the clever part:

  • The record mounts vertically
  • The unit automatically rotates it 10 times
  • Ions are emitted directly at the playing surface during rotation
  • A high-speed fan ensures even distribution

You press the button, step away, and by the time it’s done, the static is gone. No waving guns, no guesswork.

The Rotating Design Is the Secret Sauce

Most static removers require you to aim, sweep, or manually expose the record surface. The Orbit flips that idea on its head by rotating the record through a controlled ion field.

That means:

  • Even coverage across the entire surface
  • No dead zones
  • No user error

It’s almost boring in how effective it is—and boring is good when you’re dealing with a problem that shouldn’t exist in the first place.

Build Quality & Design

The HumminGuru Orbit might be a bit big for some people’s tastes, but it is easy enough to store and personally I think the design is clean enough to leave out on the record shelf. It’s clean and purpose built with a very easy to use user interface.

Key highlights:

  • Solid, stable base
  • Smooth, quiet rotation
  • Rechargeable battery (no cable mess)
  • Anti-static spindle adapters included
  • Compatible with spindle heights up to 23mm with record applied

It’s lightweight but not cheap-feeling. Nothing rattles. It is exactly what you want from a tool you’ll use constantly but never think about. It’s also fairly easy to clean, which you should keep up with to ensure long life.

Set It and Forget it –

This isn’t just convenient—it’s the reason the Orbit makes sense. I think of the Orbit as I think about my Traeger grill, it’s designed for limited interaction and big results.

You don’t need to:

  • Hold anything
  • Aim anything
  • Time anything

Drop the record on. Press the button. Walk away. That’s it.

For experienced collectors, this slots seamlessly into your pre-play ritual. For new vinyl users, it removes an entire category of confusion before it becomes a frustration point. The ten rotations don’t take long, and it just becomes part of your routine. Find your record, clean your record, Orbit your record, and sit back and enjoy.

Who This Is The HumminGuru Orbit For?

New vinyl users – If you’re just getting into records and wondering why your brand-new pressings crackle straight out of the sleeve—this is why. The Orbit saves you from assuming your gear or records are defective.

Experienced collectors – For those of you that get hives if you hear too much surface noise? If you’ve already invested in cleaning, storage, and decent playback, static is likely the last unresolved gremlin. The Orbit handles that final problem that makes a real difference.

.People who hate fuss – If you don’t enjoy ritual for ritual’s sake, the Orbit’s automation will feel like a small but meaningful upgrade to your listening life, it’s fast and painless and the results are substantial.

Environments Where Static Is a Problem

The Orbit really shines in:

  • Dry climates (deserts, high-altitude regions)
  • Cold winters with indoor heating
  • Air-conditioned rooms year-round
  • Minimalist apartments with lots of hard surfaces
  • Studio spaces full of electronics and airflow

If you’ve ever shocked yourself touching a doorknob, your records are suffering too.

How It Fits Into a Real-World Vinyl Setup

The Orbit doesn’t replace record cleaning—it complements it. Clean your records properly, then use the Orbit before playback to neutralize the charge.

For those of you that like to dig at record shows and tend to buy more old records than new, you might need something more serious than a brush, a deep cleaner is something to consider if you want the sound to be perfect.

On a clean record in good condition, the HumminGuru Orbit’s result is:

  • Less surface noise
  • Fewer random pops
  • Cleaner stylus over time
  • Records that behave as they should

It’s the difference between “vinyl sounds amazing” and “vinyl sounds annoyingly vintage.” The big misnomer out there is that vinyl should have crackles and pops, NOT true. The playback should be clean, with a good setup and decent stylus, so that the analog sound should sound and feel different in all the right ways.

The Bigger Picture On Record Care

HumminGuru—best known for its ultrasonic cleaners—has a reputation for making niche vinyl tools that quietly solve real problems without adding complexity. The Orbit continues that tradition. If you are starting to get into records, you will want to start seriously considering cleaning products, good sleeves, a nice static-resistant slipmat, and a device like the HumminGuru Orbit. You are making an investment in your music and your system, so keeping your vinly clean will guarantee a much better sound experience.

Final Thoughts

The HumminGuru Orbit Vinyl Static Remover isn’t a luxury it’s necessity in my opinion, especially if you are in a climate that loves static electricity. I can simply let it spin, and now feel confident that what’s about to come out of my KEF R7 Meta speakers is going to be stellar.

For both new and experienced vinyl listeners, it’s one of those tools that quickly becomes part of the routine—and then disappears into the background, which is exactly where good gear belongs.

Vinyl already asks a lot from you. The Orbit gives something back: calm, quiet, predictable playback. All at a very reasonable price.
