One could comfortably say that The Weeknd remains firmly in his bag this year. Following the success of Dawn FM, and the recent announcement of the Canadian crooner’s newly appointed headline slot at Coachella with Swedish House Mafia, The Weeknd now has a few new plaques to hang on his wall. That’s because his Daft Punk-assisted 2016 smash hit “Starboy” was recently awarded certified diamond by the RIAA along with After Hours standout “Blinding Lights.” A diamond certification signifies 10 million units moved, with a unit either representing one digital song sale, or 150 on-demand audio streams. “Starboy” was not only the title track of The Weeknd’s third studio album, but it also held the number one spot on Hot 100, landing as The Weeknd’s third chart-topper of his career, while “Blinding Lights” has been named by Billboard as the top Hot 100 song of all time. The recent RIAA certifications also placed The Weeknd into an exclusive group of artists including Katy Perry and Justin Bieber, all carrying three diamond singles under their belts.
