As calls for racial justice around the country and world become deafening, Canadian pop artist, The Weeknd, has divided a donation of $500,000 across three different charities: the Black Lives Matter Global Network, Colin Kaepernick’s Know Your Rights Camp and National Bail Out fund.
The receipts for these donations were shared to The Weeknd’s social media accounts, among his calls to other high-level industry peers including executives, major labels, and fellow artists to get involved and donate to supporting charities and foundations.
Shortly after the initial post, The Weeknd made a separate post calling upon major labels and streaming platforms like UMG, Sony, Warner, Apple Music and Spotify to donate generously to charities; referencing how the foundation behind popular music today comes from black music and culture.
“To my fellow respected industry partners and execs- no one profits off of black music more than the labels and streaming services. I gave yesterday and I urge you to go big and public with yours this week. It would mean the world to me and the community if you can join us on this.”
