Solar Kings Talk Growth, Balance and Their New Magnetic Premiere

Solar Kings are making their debut on Magnetic Magazine Recordings, and this time we’re giving you first listen. Their new track is dropping next week on our label, but we’re running the official premiere early because this one deserves to live in the world a little sooner. It ties together the same earthy percussion and global rhythms they’ve become known for and folds it into something even more refined.

It is a perfect snapshot of where their sound has landed after years spent learning how to make music that feels true to who they are.

If you’ve followed Solar Kings through releases on Sounds of Khemit, Shango Records or Magnetic’s earlier drops, you know they do not chase trends. Their approach comes from growing up around different cultures and pulling those influences into electronic music in a way that feels natural.

You can hear it in the textures, the vocal choices, even the way their percussion loops settle into the groove. They explain it better than anyone in the interview below, but that spirit of no longer trying to make something “for the scene” and instead making what feels honest is what shaped this new release too.

Ahead of the official release next week, we sat down with them to talk about finding your own sound, maintaining balance outside of music and what they wish they knew earlier in their careers. The conversation is refreshingly direct. No fluff, no generic inspiration quotes. Just two artists who kept showing up until things finally clicked and now have something to say about the process. Read the full interview below and stream the premiere exclusively here on Magnetic.

What’s one piece of advice you’d give to an artist who’s struggling to find their sound?

We struggled at first like any normal artist trying to make a name for themselves. Eventually we just stopped caring what we thought people wanted to hear or what people would think and we just developed our sound to what we hear every day out there. We were used to multi cultural sounds and we knew that is what resonated with us so we wanted to use those kinds of sounds and develop them into our own.

What’s a key piece of advice you would give to your younger self at the start of your journey?

Show up every day. Even if its for 15 min a day, just show up. Showing up is half the battle. Its how you build momentum and consistency. After about two weeks of doing this every day, it will become part of our routine.

What’s the biggest mistake you see other producers making when it comes to their creative process?

Trying to copy or sound like someone else. Thinking that is how you get ahead or get “famous”. If you’re going to steal a sound, steal it like an artist. Learn from it and try and morph it into something that you can call your own.

Why do you think some artists get stuck in a certain sound, and how do you keep pushing your boundaries?

Personally, we feel that people are trying to keep to the trends and what is considered hot NOW and not what they feel will be the sound in the future.

Stop caring what is happening now or what will be in the future. Start caring about owning your sound and making it sound unique to yourself. So that when people hear it, they know its your sound.

What’s one thing you’ve learned about the music industry that surprised you?

It is very cut throat. You are just a number to them. Its not about the talent you have, rather how many followers you have and that is just plain wrong.

What’s the hardest part of maintaining a music career that people don’t often talk about?

Work, family and life balance. I wish there was more time in the day.
