Brick-by-brick, Daft Punk has staked their claim as undisputed icons of modern music, but the Robots’ latest feat might just assert their legacy well beyond that—all thanks to a father and his eight-year-old son.
Patrick Harboun and his son found a meeting point for their passions of Daft Punk and all things LEGO when the toy brick building company announced their “Music To Our Ears” contest. Prompted to “show off their love for music using LEGO bricks,” Harboun and his eight year old son and reimagined Daft Punk’s legendary Alive Pyramid as a 2,000 piece LEGO set. The stage, complete with lights, robots, and rafters, was recently announced as one of 10 finalists (from over 800) before finally being crowned as the winner of LEGO’s competition just this week.
“Lego has always been a big part of our lives, so it was just a matter of time before we remixed our 2 passions together. There are quite a few Lego Daft Punk projects on the web but we thought we could take it to the next level, by making it more accurate and simulating the upcoming Lego Night Mode (for which we’re super excited),” said Patrick Harboun.
However, even with the Daft Punk set taking the competition’s crown, it’s still not guaranteed to be manufactured as LEGO’s announcement of the winning sets mentions that, “[they’re] still working away and which of these entries (if any) are to be turned into an official product.”
Nonetheless, for their troubles Patrick and his son took home a hefty haul of LEGO products that would please even the most avid collectors—a custom LEGO trophy and a walk down LEGO Ideas memory lane with incredible throwback sets including: the NASA Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity Rover, The Beatles Yellow Submarine set, International Space Station, and more. Further, if the Harbouns’ set does end up being produced, they’re entitiled to 1% of the total net sales of the product, 10 complimentary copies of their LEGO Ideas set, and credited bios in their sold set materials as the LEGO Ideas Fan Designer
Harboun’s Daft Punk set won a close fan-vote, beating out the cleverly named LEGORILLAZ and an inspired rendition of a jazz quartet in a heated race.
