We can say without a doubt that Sammy Virji is one of the most exciting names in dance music right now. Any time you watch a video of Virji’s sets, what stands out is how lit the crowd always is. After attending one of the two sold-out nights of his stay at the iconic New York City venue Avant Gardner last weekend, we can confirm the energy of his shows is like no other.
Playing a 360-style set that had Virji immersed in the crowd on the dancefloor, Virji played a medley of his best weapons including his signature UKG tracks, enticing IDs, and brilliant mash-ups. We’ve been to many shows at this venue, but the vibes here were simply next level. Despite only having lasers and strobes as visual accompaniments, the high-octane selections from Virji, combined with his infectious joy of playing for an audience had the dancefloor jumping from start to finish.
One of the tracks that got the rowdiest response from the crowd was “Damager,” his collaboration with another pioneer of the UKG global resurgence, Interplanetary Criminal. And as of today, that track is finally out in the world after being teased for months in elite DJ circuits.
The speed garage track combines a tasty vocal sample from East Coast rapper Apathy with synth flairs and a ravenous, supersonic beat. Apathy spits out a countdown that plunges us into a drop full of bouncy bass lines. Listening to it, it’s impossible to to resist the urge to bang your head or tap your foot to the beat.
Make sure to give “Damager” a listen below. Enjoy!
