July might almost be over, but it never really feels like summer in New York until Chris Lake plays his inaugural Black Book Records showcase in Brooklyn. This year’s edition, Black Book on the Pier, was nothing short of electric.
Kicking off at 4PM on what felt like the most beautiful night of the summer yet, thousands of eager ravers migrated to south Brooklyn to the Brooklyn Army Terminal, an iconic new home for Lake’s yearly summer series. With stunning skyline views of the city and location next to an operational ferry dock, it was totally surreal to watch boats travel by us while we were entranced by the top of the line tech-house selections of Lake and company.
After Jojo Lorenzo’s opening set, we got an impromptu Chris Lake B2B Chris Lorenzo set. Although they were adamant this was not an Anti-Up set, it was still such a cool moment. Chris Lorenzo’s solo set was up next, and he had the entire crowd jumping when he played his hit “MAMI.”
Chris Lake himself took over the decks right as the sun was setting, transforming the skyline into a gorgeous glowing orange. It perfectly complemented the pure fire he was playing, which ranged from some of his oldest deep cuts, to VIP mashups of viral tracks like Joy Orbison’s “Flight FM”, to his current bangers like “Summertime Blues.”
The crowd was also great, one of the best ones I’ve been part of this year. Given the hour-plus long journey to get to this venue, only the true fans were in the audience, and everyone was dancing like crazy.
It was the perfect summertime rave experience – from the stunning city backdrop, to the glorious (non-humid!) weather, to the best dance music selections. Truly no one throws down like Chris Lake – the entire curated experience shows exactly why he’s a master of his craft and why we will always jump at tickets the second his shows get announced.
