The Synthesizer Museum Berlin has added a rare piece of dance music history to its collection: Paul van Dyk’s personal Roland TR-808. On display for the next year, the legendary drum machine offers fans a direct connection to one of the most influential tools in electronic music and one of the artists who helped define the sound of a generation.
The 808 has been central to Paul’s creative process since his earliest releases. It featured prominently on his breakout single For An Angel and went on to shape countless tracks throughout his career. For Paul, the instrument is more than vintage hardware — it represents the foundation of his sound and the experimental spirit that guided his evolution as a producer.
“I’m proud to lend it to Synthesizer Museum Berlin, where it can inspire the next generation of producers just like it inspired me,” Paul shared when announcing the exhibit. The museum’s installation celebrates not only Paul’s contributions but also the enduring impact of the 808 itself. For visitors, it’s a rare chance to see the machine up close and reflect on its role in both the history of electronic music and its ongoing influence in studios worldwide.
