M.I.A. has returned with new music and a new message. The British rapper and singer released a new track, “CTRL,” in solidarity with journalist and activist Julian Assange via her website OHMNI.com. The track release follows hot off the heels of M.I.A. dropping singles from her forthcoming album, IIIIIIth. However, the artist clarified on her social media that “CTRL” will not be included on the LP’s track listing. Fans that enter the website are first welcomed by trippy neon visuals. The message of “CTRL” leaves no doubt for interpretation as M.I.A.’s lyrical rhymes provide a timely commentary of women and journalists trying to be silenced and controlled. An infectious, yet commanding backdrop envelopes listeners into an intense world where her commentary rings loud and clear—delivering an empowering stage and forceful flow that push forward the rights to freedom of expression.
