It’s always great when crate digging results in a surprising discovery, and a new track. That’s exactly what just happened at Whiskey Pickle Records, where they’ve unearthed a hidden gem from their vaults dating back to 2016.
The label’s owner, Adam Warped, moonlighting under his mysterious Johnny Blackouts persona, originally wrote “Tell Me Lies” about ten years ago. It’s an almost-woozy, late-night groover that simmered with understated menace. Now, nearly a decade later, this long-lost cut finally sees the light of day, and it’s bringing a surprise along for the ride.
The package features a remix by Triptique, the alter ego of the late Zack Highwire. Known for his kaleidoscopic approach to sound design, Highwire reimagines “Tell Me Lies” with a swirling, trippy touch, taking Johnny Blackouts’ original and sending it speeding through a psychedelic wormhole. The result is both a hypnotic dancefloor weapon and a heartfelt homage to Highwire’s own musical legacy, delivered posthumously with the reverence, respect, and electricity it deserves. This feels like far more than a remix: it’s a bittersweet tribute to the late producer and one of the final (and one of the strongest) chapters in Highwire’s masterful discography.
Whiskey Pickle will be releasing this package on May 30th, with pre-orders already live on their Bandcamp page. Whether you’re a longtime Johnny Blackouts, Triptique, and/or Whiskey Pickle supporter or a fresh set of ears just discovering the label’s eclectic flavor, this release promises to be both a simultaneously pleasant and mind-bending trip, as well as a poignant celebration of underground creativity.
Make sure to get your pre-orders in before this long-lost classic is officially released tomorrow. After all, some sounds, no matter how long buried, are simply too good to stay silent.
