Jamie xx shares elusive ‘Shelter’ live remix with collection of rare live footage

The xx’s Jamie Smith, better known as Jamie xx, recently released an exclusive live remix of his band’s “Shelter.” Originally recorded in 2017 in Lyon while the indie-pop group was on their I See You tour, rips of this progressive iteration of “Shelter” have circulated on the internet for several years. Jamie xx often played this version of the track in many live DJ sets as well, leaving fans yearning for its official release. The live rework finally debuted across streaming services at the end of March. Accompanying the recording is a five-minute gray-scaled reel of rare touring footage, produced by Walter Films.

Longtime fans will note that The xx originally released the slow-burning indie anthem “Shelter” back in 2011 via the band’s debut album, xx. The live remix is a heady, atmospheric take on the heart-rending original. This eagerly-anticipated live release is a high-quality gem that will appeal to both longtime xx fans and new ones alike.

In 2020, Jamie xx released his first solo material since 2015 on “Idon’tknow.” Since then the producer has kept busy, most recently announcing a special show at Avant Gardner in Brooklyn, set for September, featuring Four Tet, Floating Points, Avalon Emerson and Omar S. While each of the respective members of The xx remain busy with solo endeavors, there’s no official word yet on whether the critically lauded indie outfit will be releasing music together this year. However, The xx unveiled news of a monthly show via Apple Music, “Interludes Radio,” earlier this spring. Each hour-long episode will be hosted by Jamie, Romy or Oliver on a rotating basis, with each artist offering plenty of inspiration in the form of music, musings and teasers of upcoming projects.
