Erica Synths has officially opened preorders for the Bullfrog Drums, a versatile drum machine, sampler, and CV/gate sequencer built around seven distinct sample-based voices. Priced at €600 before VAT, the unit is expected to begin shipping on May 6, 2026.
The Bullfrog Drums extends the educational design philosophy of the original Bullfrog line into the realm of rhythm programming and sample-based performance. It is specifically engineered for users seeking a direct, tactile approach to drum sequencing, kit building, and automation without the friction of menu-heavy workflows.
At its core, the instrument features seven sample-based voices, a tactile interface, and X0X-style sequencing. Because the voices are sample-based, the Bullfrog Drums is capable of far more than standard percussion; it handles one-shots, chords, vocal cuts, drones, and noise, making it a flexible tool for studio production, classrooms, or live hardware rigs.
Sampling, Sequencing, And Hands-On Control
The Bullfrog Drums comes equipped with seven banks of factory samples curated by Richie Hawtin and the Erica Synths team, with additional capacity for up to 16 user-defined sample banks. With 64 Mb of total sample memory, the device includes a line input and a built-in microphone for capturing sounds on the fly, as well as an integrated speaker for immediate monitoring.
Performance is kept immediate through dedicated level controls for each of the seven voices. Furthermore, the machine allows for seven parameters of sound shaping per voice, alongside parameter locks and automation per track, enabling users to build complex, evolving patterns. The sequencer itself supports up to 64-step sequences, incorporating advanced features like ratchets, probabilities, and microtiming to facilitate nuanced groove and timing variations.
A Drum Machine That Fits Larger Hardware Setups
Beyond its internal capabilities, the Bullfrog Drums serves as a bridge for larger setups. It includes a CV/gate sequencer with 1V/oct gate control, allowing it to command external synthesizers and modular gear. This makes it a central hub for hybrid rigs that require a single interface for sample playback, pattern sequencing, and external control.
Storage is managed across four banks, each holding 16 patterns and 16 kits. Connectivity is robust, featuring USB-C for memory backup, as well as DIN and USB-C MIDI In and Out for seamless integration with other hardware and DAW-based systems. Audio output is handled via stereo outs and a 3.5mm headphone jack.
Encased in the familiar Erica Synths aluminium chassis, the unit measures 40.5 x 18.5 x 6 cm and weighs 2.7 kg, striking a balance between portability and professional build quality. For producers and educators alike, the Bullfrog Drums offers a practical entry point into sample-based sequencing that retains enough depth to remain a staple in any professional music production environment.
