To celebrate the 20th anniversary of his debut album We Have Sound, British multi-instrumentalist Tom Vek has released We Have Sound Remixed via StrataSonic Records. The 10-track project revisits Vek’s influential 2005 album in full, inviting a new generation of artists to reinterpret each track while keeping its original order intact.
The remix compilation features contributions from Dave Bayley of Glass Animals, Gus Unger-Hamilton of alt-J, Anna Prior of Metronomy, Baths, Everything Everything, Porij, and more. Each artist was handpicked by Vek to contribute, making the release both a personal curation and a collaborative celebration of the impact We Have Sound had on modern alternative and electronic music.
Revisiting a Landmark Album Through New Voices
When We Have Sound first arrived in 2005, it stood out for its raw, self-produced mix of post-punk, electronic textures, and pop experimentation. It helped define a sound that blurred the lines between indie rock and electronic production, influencing a wave of artists who would later dominate festival stages and playlists alike.
Two decades later, We Have Sound Remixed honors that legacy while reintroducing it to a new generation. The lineup reflects the album’s lasting reach across genres: Dave Bayley opens the collection with a rework of “C-C,” layering his signature production style over Vek’s original groove. Anna Prior of Metronomy lends her touch to “If You Want,” while Gus Unger-Hamilton of alt-J reshapes “Cover” into something both reflective and expansive. Everything Everything turn “Nothing But Green Lights” into a rhythmically dense standout, and Baths delivers a detailed reinterpretation of “The Lower The Sun.”
The project extends beyond simple remixes—it’s a contemporary dialogue between artists who grew up in the shadow of Vek’s originality. As Bayley explained, We Have Sound was “one of several responsible for us going on to make our music,” while Unger-Hamilton called participating in the tribute “a true privilege.”
A Tribute Curated by Tom Vek Himself
Unlike many anniversary remix albums, We Have Sound Remixed was personally curated by Vek. Each artist was selected not for chart relevance, but for creative lineage. The album feels intentional in its sequencing, mirroring the arc of the 2005 original while giving each track space to evolve through a new lens.
Tracks like “On The Road” (Porij Remix) and “That Can Be Arranged” (Coby Sey Remix) highlight the diversity of interpretation within the project—from club-ready intensity to experimental ambience. Yet the continuity of Vek’s influence keeps the collection cohesive, underscoring his role as one of the early architects of DIY electronic pop.
For longtime listeners, We Have Sound Remixed functions as both a reminder and a renewal. It reaffirms the album’s place in the history of genre-blending indie music while showing how deeply its spirit continues to shape the next generation of producers and songwriters.
We Have Sound Remixed is out now via StrataSonic Records.
