Kygo defines the ‘Thrill Of The Chase’ with surprise delivery of junior album [Stream]

When Kygo said “Gone Are The Days” would be “a new chapter of music,” there was never a deeper clarification on what that exactly meant. Well, now we know. Everyone scanning streaming platforms for new releases at midnight were likely blindsided by not only seeing Kygo‘s name but that a new album was attached. And some might’ve had a hunch earlier in the day when Kygo said he was “finally done” with something and that a “surprise” would be in store when the clock struck November 11. More than two years following Golden Hour, Kygo’s “new chapter” has officially been instated with the arrival his out-of-the-blue junior album, Thrill Of The Chase.Thrill Of The Chase sits at 14 tracks long, with eight of those dating back to “Gone Are The Days” from April 2021 and six of those being a configuration of both coveted IDs and never-before-heard music. Little did we know that the James Gillespie-backed single would quietly open a year and a half path towards where we stand on release day. And that chapter-launching original now doubles as Thrill Of The Chase‘s faultless prologue, which adds a world of clarity to it being what Kygo used to get the LP ball rolling. The other seven already digested tracks that join it are “Love Me Now” with Zoe Wees, “Undeniable” with X Ambassadors, “Dancing Feet” with DNCE, “Woke Up In Love” with Gryffin and Calum Scott, his pair of Dean Lewis-featured singles—”Never Really Loved Me” and “Lost Without You“—and ultimately “Freeze,” Kygo’s eight-minute, cinematic opus from May. And “Freeze” falls similarly in line with “Gone Are The Days” in that its eventual purpose was to translate into the album’s triumphant climax. While just beyond half of Thrill Of The Chase comprises of music we’d already come to know and love this past year, the latter portion still has six Kygo creations left to explore. And many Kygo devotees will recognize three of the album’s newest titles, with those being cuts he’s been subtly scattering across his sets these past few months. Hindsight is—as always—20/20, but Kygo had shared two separate posts on Instagram—one coming just a few days before the album’s starling delivery—where he litmus tested followers’ feelings around a handful of tracks that were nearing towards a previously undisclosed due date. The first of Thrill Of The Chase‘s fresh district is “Lonely Together”—a buoyant tropical house infusion alongside Dagny—which leads into the album’s eponymous number—a more-than-fitting, uptempo duet—before landing on “Fever” beside Lukas Graham, a sultry dance-pop hybrid that was one of two album tracks debuted live during Kygo’s historic evening at Madison Square Garden a month earlier. Then comes “How Many Tears alongside Sam Feldt—who opened Kygo’s forenamed night in the heart of New York City—and Emily Warren, a fluent tropical merger between the trio that may be the tracklist’s most high-profile collaborative supplement. And Thrill Of The Chase‘s terminal two members—however—are debatably two of Kygo’s most-awaited solo releases in recent memory. With a riveting vocal from Plesed, “The Way We Were” is what many would fantasize the picture-perfect Kygo production to result in, seamlessly interlacing his past and present sounds all the way from his remix era to Cloud 9 to Kids In Love to Golden Hour. And last but not least is “All For Love” with Stuart Chrichton—also debuted at the World’s Most Famous Arena—which is almost an indirect “Freeze” sister number as Kygo expands his sonic horizons even further to venture into melodic techno through a hauntingly beautiful, five-minute precursor to the album’s even larger finale.Although processing the sheer existence of Thrill Of The Chase will still require a little more time for many, a collective consensus can already be reached that Kygo is still as sharp of an artist as he’s ever been. The tracklist’s meticulous organization from “Gone Are The Days” all the way down to “Freeze” provides a slick listening experience as Kygo not only fine-tunes his staple tropical finesse but also experiments far beyond that to reinforce his artistic longevity.
