Lucille Croft dispenses dastardly, concept-driven ‘Patient X’ EP

Like something out of Black Mirror, Lucille Croft‘s thematically driven Patient X EP has pervaded streaming platforms with imposing presence. The five-part parcel—Croft’s debut body of work—embodies the character of a psychological thriller/action motion picture in electronic form. Patient X conceptually courts the motif of perfection; “I was once human, like you. I was under their control, the harder I fought, the worse it got. Every word I spoke, every step I took, all of it, was preordained. I was molded, twisted, shaped into ‘their’ version of the perfect human, the perfect artist, the perfect woman,” Croft says through the EP, which serves as the mouthpiece for such expression. “They offer you the future, peace, happiness. What they’re really offering is the removal of your humanity, loss of control. They wanted me to be compliant, obedient, they thought this was their solution to deal with me. But they didn’t realize what they’d done, until it was too late. They’ve removed my humanity, but gave me so much more. Power beyond imagination. They thought they could control me, but now, I have the power.  And now..  I’m out for blood,” Croft’s message concludes. The sentiments, which can be read as a social commentary just as much as they can be interpreted as a decisive reclaiming of feminine power and general autonomy, translate to dark dance figurations. Bordering on eerie in some moments, menacing in others, and downright assertive throughout, the industrially inflected EP flirts with elements of science-fiction in a way that recalls DEVAULT before diverging to traverse unbeaten terrain. An experience better heard than articulated, Croft’s Patient X serves as an early exposition of her auteurist talents—and it can be streamed in full below.Featured image: Lawrence BerntTags: , ,
