Major Lazer’s Ape Drums materializes long-awaited solo EP, ‘soundboy’

Major Lazer proponent, Ape Drums has finally consolidated and distributed his highly anticipated solo EP, soundboy. The dancehall veteran rolled out the first single on the EP, “Delete“, back in October of 2020. Featuring Jamaican-born songwriter BEAM, formerly Tyshane, “Delete” evokes a sparse and sticky production style that puts a minimalistic spin on Ape Drums’ moombahton heritage. “Mek Money“, originally released on February 25, maintains a similar staccato approach while featuring additional Jamaican talents, Silent Addy and Projexx. This minimal, unadulterated theme rings true across all four offerings on soundboy. Highlighting female Jamaican vocalist Toian, “BF Killa” was the last single to precede the EP’s eventual widespread release on May 5. Ape Drums capped off the project with one never-before-heard addition, “Too Much”, with Houston artist 28thCenturyMan. “Too Much” evokes plenty of mainstream appeal, composed of sustained chords during the verses and a vocal-chop driven bass drop.Stream soundboy in full below.Featured image: TunefindTags: , , , , , , ,
