Ahead his debut release, David Darrko, known for his work in the band ‘Kinky Love', designing under the guise ‘Lost Tribe' and featuring in numerous acting roles, finally plans to steal the spotlight in his new solo release, “Black Denim”. Today EDM Sauce gets to premiere the track from his forthcoming EP, Suffer Suburbia which is due out on June 1st.
âBlack Denimâ features a combining genres, as you listen you might hear traces synthpop or indie-rock but Darrko crafts a style that is completely his own. The track builds throughout its 4-minute span with lush synths, thoughtful lyrics, and expansive production. Darrko showcases his true solo talent in this premiere and it is a taste what to come on his debut EP.
The Suffer Suburbia EP came about when Darrko decided to set out to make a sensual R&B pop record, heavy with nostalgia, with a darker edge. Some the songs had existed for some time, written when Darrko was living out his car while traveling across the country attending various songwriting workshops. Others came about once the EP project began. Suffer Suburbia is not so much a departure from Darrko‘s other project, synth-pop outfit Kinky Love, in which he still participates. This solo project is a new adventure for Darrko, exploring new territory through lush, smooth sounds that follow a dystopian narrative a suburban fantasy that Darrko has created. Darrko approached the EP with the surrealist visuals his fantasy world in mind, with the four EP tracks acting as the soundtrack for the subverted world.
Here is a quote from Darrko on the release:
“I was reading the book Vulgar Favors about Andrew Cunanan, the serial killer who shot Gianni Versace, and I wanted to write a song about what it was like to be involved with a sociopathic character. Later that week I went to a Halloween party and someone was dressed as Sid Vicious with the tight black jeans and I immediately had the songâs title and piano hook in my head. Iâm inspired by a lot by 90s r&b tracks, specifically Babyfaceâs production work on TLC and Toni Braxton slow jams. I wanted the song to center around a memorable piano hook that featured multi-track vocal layering and dramatic strings.” – David Darrko
